Business handshake and business peopleby Dan Oswald

There’s an old story that goes like this: A man walks into a bar and asks the bartender for a glass of water. Instead, the bartender pulls out a shotgun and fires a shot, just missing the man. Satisfied, the man places a nice tip on the bar, turns, and walks out.

Business People Celebrating Success in a Cityscapeby Dan Oswald

I recently wrote that we shouldn’t overlook the contributions the younger generation can make. In business, we often assume that experience equates with success and therefore conclude it’s unlikely that a 20-something can make a significant contribution. I think that’s complete hogwash, but so is assuming people can’t have a major career breakthrough in the second half of their work life.

I’ve been accused of too often writing about sports in this blog. I guess that’s because sports have been such a big part of my life as a participant, coach, and spectator—but also because I subscribe to the idea that sports imitate life. In sports, as in life, there is success and there is failure. And in sports, it’s often easy to see what leads to one or the other. In one of those moments when the latter was more true than the former, I had what I thought was a brilliant idea . . .

Instead of coming up with something intelligent or, God forbid, witty to say, why not just rely on what others, who are much more intelligent AND witty than I, have already said?

12 Wonderful Lessons from John Wooden

June 11, 2010 3 COMMENTS

Legendary basketball coach John Wooden died on June 4 at the age of 99. During his coaching career his teams won more than 80 percent of their games. At UCLA, his teams won an astonishing 10 NCAA national championships during his final 12 years of coaching, including seven in a row. Wooden was a talented coach, teacher, and leader, and much can be learned from his philosophy. I’d like to share with you some of my favorite quotes and lessons from John Wooden.

More than a half century ago John Wooden created his Pyramid of Success. The Pyramid contains 15 building blocks of success, including industriousness, loyalty, initiative, skill, enthusiasm, and self-control. In creating the Pyramid, Wooden chose for his two cornerstones industriousness and enthusiasm, and the capstone on the Pyramid is competitive greatness.

What We Can Learn from Putting on Our Socks

Clear directions are a critical element in the successful execution of any task. To bake a batch of mouth-watering cookies, you need a recipe that clearly lists the ingredients and how they need to be combined in order to deliver the final result you’re looking for. If you need to travel from point A to point B in the most efficient manner possible, clear directions will get you there.

The same is true of the people who work for you. They need you to clearly articulate what it is that you want them to accomplish and, if need be, to provide the directions so that they can deliver on your wishes in the most efficient and effective manner.
